BBDBA 'Ain Jalut' - Mongols vs Mamluks

A BBDBA refight of 'Ain Jalut', where the empires of the Mongols & Mamluks clashed in Syria. This was a mass scrap of Horseman with the Mamluks having a few Foot Troops. Jack would play the part of the Mamluk commander 'Baibars', while I'd be the Mongols commanded by 'Ketboga'. Historically this was a win for the Mamluks & in doing so threw back the Mongols from a possible invasion of the Holy Land & North Africa.

The inspiration for this came from the 'Crusades' issue (#13) of Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy. The fantastic Spanish Wargame Magazine. The Terrain was just to be a flat plain, with Hills in one corner & a river on the other flank. Historically the Mamluks attacked from the South.
In our game the setup is the reverse.

BBDBA Army Lists

IV/35 Mongol Conquest 1206-1461
3x3Cv(Gen), 6x3Cv, 27x2LH

IV/45 Mamluk Egyptian, 1250-1517

Intial Setup & directions of attack

Mongol Attack from across the battlefield

Mongol Light Horse race into action

An impressive sight, 7 elements of Mongol Cavalry in the centre.......

....up against 18 Mamluk Cavalry elements. hhhmmmmmm....

Screaming Mamluks up close

Mamluk Foot, 3 Hordes , 2 Auxillia & 3 Psiloi. General at the Back.
This meagre bunch formed Jacks Left Flank

The Mamluk Juggernaut, view from Jacks side

Good Pips & the Mongol light Horse close the distance.
The plan was to take both Flanks & encircle the centre.

In a move that takes me by suprise. Jacks Mamluks split ino an 'arrowhead'
Eh I'm dumbstruck....What's he been reading?

View from the Mongol Left, suddenly they're in danger.

Nice view of the Mamluks Centre

The attack on the Mongol right stalls when 2 Light Horse Flee from combat.

Some Mongols make it to the edge of the board, but they are held by the Mamluk Psiloi.

Nice shot of the Mamluk Cavalry as it smashes into the Mongols

It's a big scrap but eventually numbers count, the Mamluks force back the Mongols.

Success on the left, Mongol Light Horse capture the Mamluk camp.

However also on my left flank it's Mongol Light Horse vs Mamluk Cavalry.

Again Mamluk numbers count, the Mongol Left then breaks.

The Mamluk General enters the combat on the right.

It's no good... Mamluk Cavalry swarm General Ketboga

The Mongol right is broken, Light Horse Flee from the field.

Jack is unusually bloodthirsty & offers no quarter. He goes for the complete destruction of the Mongols. With General Ketboga slain & the final Mongol command broken, the game ends.

Final view of the field from the Mongol Left,

Just like the Historical outcome, the Mamluks win in our version too.
I didn't like the look of this one from the start. 18 Mamluk Cavalry elements
was a lot to overcome. While the Mongol Light Horse got forward quick
enough, they just lacked the offensive punch when it came to combat.
Suddenly Mongol losses began to mount & Jack took great delight in
slaughtering fleeing elements.

III/73 Seljuk Turk(a) Rum 1200-1243AD

The strongest of the Seljuk states was the Sultanate of Rum (pronounced Rome) which had its capital at Iconium (Konya). At it's height the Sultanate held a vast area of Anatolia. Not suprisingly it's a horsemans army, with half the elements being Light Horse.

The Seljuks that rose to domination in the Middle Ages. They defended the Islamic world against the Crusaders, and conquered large parts of the Byzantine Empire. They also provided a barrier between Europe and the raiding Mongols. Very heavy on Light Horse, this list is meant to represent the other tribes not part of Rum.

Achtung Baby! Here's our second set of Medieval Germans. This list covers
just over 200 years so we've added a few later looking Knights. The list
is pretty similar to the earlier Germans, the main difference being the size
of the Knight elements.

Early Imperial Romans with extra options. I would probably go with extra Cavalry.
We class these as 'Eastern' Romans. We have another BBDBA Roman Army based
on a 'Western' theme. Roman Civil War coming soon!

DBA II/56 Early Imperial Roman 25BC-197AD

The mighty Early Imperial Romans! Still heavy on the Blades but with an equal number of Auxillia to deal with those 'orrible' Warbands. We have more Early Imperial Romans than
any other DBA armies.

DBA III/47 Pecheneg 850-1122AD

Another one of those peculier armies that I have a 'thing' for.
A combination of many Steppe peoples that swept into the Balkans.
They fought for and against the Byzantines, however even as
mercenaries they sometimes turned on their employers!

We painted these ourselves, I think the majority of the Light Horse
are Essex. The War Wagons are Irregular Minis.

DBA IV/13(a) Medieval German 1106-1235AD

Our interpretation of the Medieval German Army, list (a). This covers the very early years so we have included a lot of 'Early' Medieval looking types. It is quite a varied list with lots of different troop types. The 'enemies' list for this army is quite impressive. Mind you if you have ever played the classic Medieval Total War PC game by Activision then you know how tough the Germans had it.

The figures are a mixture of all sorts. A lot we got as basic paint jobs, we spruced them up, then brushed on 'Miracle Dip'. We're very happy with the finished army. Flags & Banners are from all over, that Black Eagle on the Yellow background makes a big difference.

DBA III/19 Welsh 580-1420AD

Hordes of screaming Welshmen to battle with anyone wanting a piece of the 'Valleys'. The DBA list covers nearly a 1000 years, quite remarkable indeed. All options are included for the 3 listings of the Welsh. Spear & Warband are catered together with a generic base.

I can't claim this paint job, a purchase from EBAY & they are very nice! The foot look to be Essex & the mounted figures are Museum.

III/19 Welsh 580-1420AD
(a) 580-1099 1x3Cv or 3Wb(Gen), 9x3Wb, 2x2Ps

BBDBA Polybian Roman vs Carthage

Our first BBDBA game from our couple of years ago. Indeed it was
this game that got us 'hooked' on the Big Battle experience.

Polybian Romans vs Carthage. The bulk of the Romans we got from a Danish seller on Ebay, very well painted & at a cheap price. They are Essex figures, we finished them off with a coating of 'Miracle Dip' painted on with a brush.

The Carthaginians are a mixture of a few manufacturers, including some Greek type cavalry from Xyston painted by ourselves. Great figures but a pain having to drill all the Spear holes!

II/33 Polybian Roman 275-105BC (x3)
1x3Cv(Gen), 1x3Cv, 6x4Bd, 2x4Sp, 2x2Ps

II/32 Later Carthaginian 275-146BC (x3)

My right flank is in trouble early on

My Psiloi hold the rough

Waaarrgghh! In go the Gallic Nutters....

Jack presses the attack with Jumbos & Cavalry

Quick Kill Time! His Warband break through

But my left flank looks good & I wipe out his troops.

My centre holds..

Jacks troops overcome mine on my right flank

He piles on the pressure in the centre

Jack throws out Numidian Psiloi to slow down my advance

Nice view of the battle

He wins the flank, can he make his numbers count though?

I manage to hold the centre

View from Jacks lines, the Polybians look good!

Pips desert him & his troops get bogged down

I win the left & Jack wins my right. Losses are heavy for both of us.
We keep the peace & call it a DRAW.

Great game, & we were both happy with the outcome.
I like the Polybian Romans, nice & simple, easy to play.
All those Blades do make a difference.

BBDBA Carthaginians vs Seleucids

Big Battle DBA featuring Carthaginians & Seleucids.
This was one of our very early games from August 2006.
Jack played the Seleucids & I the mighty host from Carthage.

Well this one had everything, Elephants, Knights, Scythed Chariots,
Cavalry, Warband, Pikes, Camels, Light Horse, Auxilia & Psiloi!
What a slugfest it turned out to be. If you get the chance, then I do
recommend putting in the extra effort & having a BBDBA game.
The table was 48" by 24" & it only just managed to get everything on.

The view from the Carthaginian line

Overhead view, Seleucids at the top

5 Carthaginian Elephants in the centre

My right wing consisted mainly of Gallic Warband, no problem I thought!

Battle of the Oasis, but look at all those nasty Pikes waiting to pounce..

Chaaarrgge! In go the Warband...

Oh dear.. What a bloodbath. That's what you get when you put
Naked Nutters up against Knight, Cavalry & Scythed Chariot.

The centre, Seleucid Silver Shield Pike hold their own against my Elephants.

Battle for the Carthaginian left

OOOO... My jumbos don't like those Pikes & promptly get forced back.

My right flank is completely smashed & that command breaks.

My losses are far too shameful for a Father to take in front
of a Son 'Whooping' very loudly... I throw in the towel & surrender.

Final view from the victorious Seleucid lines.

DBA Ottomans vs Mamluks

Nice scrap this one, lots of mobility with two Horse heavy armies.
I'd be playing the Ottomans & Jack the Mamluks.

Battlefield we created ourselves PVA, Sand, Paint.....
The terrain is from commercial sources, Ottoman Camp is from Baueda.
Mamluk Baggage Camp, Camels from Museum Minis.

67 Ottoman Turk 1512-1570. 4x3Cv, 2x2LH, 2x4Sh, 1x3Bw, 1x3Bd, 2x2Ps.

72 Mameluke, 1250-1517. 6x3Cv, 2x2LH, 1x3Cv, 1x3Aux + 1x2Ps, 1x7Hd

The Ottomans line up, 4 Cavalry, 2 Light Horse...

Mamluks, 7 Cavalry & 2 Light Horse elements...

The Battlefield, this board is standard 24x24.
Ottomans on the left, red lines of advance. Foot troops to
hold the middle, Psiloi the Oasis, Cavalry take the Right Flank.
Mamluks on the right, yellow lines. Jacks plan, Cavalry down the
middle & the main thrust on his left.

Nive view from the Mamluks Line straight down the middle.

Ottoman steady advance

Jacks Mamluks are straight in.

Good Pips for the Ottoman Psiloi & they're straight through
the oasis. One manages to ZOC the Mamluk General

View from behind the Ottoman lines.
Please note Ottoman General well out of the Combat!!

Clash of Cavalry, whose horseman would be victorious?

Lovely view of the Cavalry battle

The Mamluks force back the Ottoman Cavalry

Ottoman Jannisaries, Shot & Bow hold the middle

Mamluk Cavalry win the flank. What will Jack do now?
He becomes obsessed with taking my camp & his advantage
fizzles out. He divides his strength on the flank & the PIPS
desert him.

The Ottoman Jannisaries help out.

My General even gets into the fighting

It's close 3 -3, but I manage to flank his Cavalry & force a
Recoil, no retreat, Game OVER!

He is not happy, he knows he should of won this one.
Lots of cavalry meant lots of mobility but he had too many
options. That element in the bottom corner of the above shot
is Mamluk Cavalry. A Camp to far for Jack!

DBA IV/35 Mongol Conquest

Here's our Mongol Army. As you would expect very heavy on the Light Horse
giving you lots of mobility. However do they give you the same 'Offensive' power
which the Mongols used to crush the vast majority of enemies. We have only played
one game with Mongols so far. That was against the Teutonic Knights & they
didn't perform that well. From what I've read in Websites, playing a Light Horse heavy
DBA Army is an art form in itself.

IV/35 Mongol Conquest 1206-1461

English Knights vs Scots Pike, who would be victorious?

Straight down! A Spear & three Knights including the English King

Rock Hard! The Higland Rabble even manage to hold their own...

The 'Bruce' looks on defiant!

Aaarrgghh! Booted back across the border.
No, it's not a good match up, just like Bannockburn the English
Knights arrogance was my downfall. Jacks Pike parked on
the hill was far too strong. Will I ever learn???

DBA Ayyubids vs Crusaders

Ah! The mother of all battles. A clash from one of our favourite periods..the Crusades.
Jack was the Ayyubids, Amy & I would take a Crusader army each.

Double sized armies & a different set up. The Crusaders are defending the
right side of the table. Elements were set up in 'garrisons', the two
bridges, the village & the rough. These units were not allowed to move
unless a 'friendly' reinforcement comes within 300 paces.

The Ayyubids would attack from the left hand side. Destroying
the garrisons & crossing the river to defeat the Crusader reinforcements.

IV/20 Ayyubid Egyption (x2)
1x3Cv(Gen), 5x3Cv, 2x2Lh, 1x3Ax or 3Wb or 7Hd, 2x4Bx or 2Ps, 1x2Lh or 2Ps

We used both the Early Crusader & Late Crusader Lists.
The Early types being the bulk of the garrisons & reinforcements from the north.
The Late list (Amy's Holy Order) forming the main Crusader Army.

IV/7 Early Crusader
1x3Kn(Gen), 3x3Kn, 5x4Sp, 1x2Ps, 1x5Wb.

IV/17 Late Crusader
1x3Kn(Gen) 2x3Kn, 1x3Kn,5x4Sp, 2x3Cb, 1x3Bw

Initial set-up, Jacks Ayyubids on the table, another army
in the North just off table.

Amy's Crusaders, Hospitallers & Templars march out
to meet the Saracens. We painted these ourselves, flags from Warflag.

Jacks Ayyubids advance towards the river

Good Pips for Amy & she 'out smarts' Jack.
Her troops advance rapidly along the road while Jacks stutter.

At last he's across the river.

General Amy arranges her defence.

Close up of the Ayyubid Cavalry

Ayyubids crossing the river, Amy sends her Templars out to meet them.

She doesn't mess around & charges straight in.

Poor Pips & Jacks attack slows, my spears pose a threat.

He's all over the place, the attack is stalling badly.

Amy's Hospitallers charge across the bridge & prepare
to smash the Ayyubid Bows.

Amy has the smug look now & her Templars are looking good.

Jack rallies, one more attack!

Chhaaaaaarrge!! Hospitallers up close.

Nice view of the battle

Jack gets a break & his Pips get better. Will it be enough?

GrandMaster of Templars.
Come on if you think you're Hard enough!!

Jack stabilises his flanks.

But crafty Amy has her main line ready....

Spears at the ready.

The Ayyubids are losing the battle

Saracen Cavalry in one last Charge

My Spears take down Jacks Cavalry

Jacks shaking his head, the end is near.

Final positions, the Crusaders hold the Borders.

Great Battle, we all loved this one. I don't think Amy's Crusaders
lost a combat. Jack should of used the Roads to get his Army further
into crusader territory. He pat's his head uttering a loud D'OH!!

Oh & so much for me tipping the PATRIOT's!!! D'OH!

A Good Day!

Well, Jack & I have been to Vapartnak at York. A very good show, we've picked up some good stuff & off loaded a lot of unwanted lead. We even managed to swap our 15mm Jannisaries for a Very Nice DBA Aztec Army. Hopefully I'll get some pics of it up soon. We met the nice folks from Scarborough Wargames Club, who ran an awesome 28mm Waterloo game. Hello again Uriah!. We also bought a AWI Scenario book by Partizan Press, It's for the British Grenadier rules, but I'll adapt them for DBA 1500-1900 & we'll play a few a the battles from it. Of course! Battle Reports to follow...

In proper Football, Boro took a point from the Geordies at Sid James Park. But I'm ready for the SUPERBOWL BABY! Lots of Beer at the ready... So I'm rooting for the PATS.. (Oh dear is that the kiss off death? Only time will tell!)

DBA Late Swiss vs Italian Condotta

DBA Medieval Battle, Late Swiss & Italian Condotta.
Jack & Amy were the Swiss & I the evil Mercenary Italians.

The Italians Line up, the Knights would advance on one flank.
Pike, Blade & Crossbow would advance up the road.

The Knights Line up for the Charge

The Battle for the Bridge!

No problems here, the Knights were going to steamroller
anything on that flank.

With only 1 Knight & 1 Light Horse, the Swiss are in trouble

The Swiss Pike hold the Bridge, but could I make the numbers
count on the Italian right?

Poor Pips & I'm not doing much...

The Italian Pike get a foothold on the Left.

The Swiss Mounted troops are still in the fight.

Wooaa, Flag Fest... The Swiss do look good.

Well it's gone wrong again, the cowardly Condotta Knights
have failed.

I win the battle for the Bridge but....

The Swiss Mounted did enough.

My Losses FOUR Knights..... both the Horrors utter
victory chants.... Easy! Easy! Easy! Easy! Easy!
